What is Filezilla?
FileZilla is a cross-platform software designed by Tim Kosse and its initial launch date was June 22, 2001. It was initially developed to work on Windows platforms only. It is one the best software created to manage files on the web server, you can upload and download the files as well as order them into different folders. It’s easy to rename, edit and perform many other actions.
The FileZilla program is very simple to use but it’s also a very powerful feature to manage files through FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client. It is available for Windows, Linux or Mac OS X operating systems from the version 3.0.0 and thanks to the use of wxWidgets (library cross-platform free, for the design of interfaces). I recommend watching this video tutorial which has a lot of explanation and demonstration:
It’s also important that you know how to get the credentials for you to be able to connect to your hosting account via FTP, this could be different based on the type of hosting that you have and also the cPanel. It will be something very similar to this:
- Here you will be able to see the default FTP accounts for your hosting account, as well as create your own credentials.
- Here you can create your own FTP login, which will be linked to your domain, and also create a password for your convenience.
- You can also specify the level of access or the directories that you want to be able to access this new FTP account. This is especially good when you have other people working with you and you don’t want to give them full access.
 – You are also able to specify a quota for the FTP account, or just leave it as unlimited.
If you just scroll down this previous screen, you will be able to see all the existing FTP credentials and also manage the passwords, quotas, and directories, except for the default accounts, which you are not able to modify.
- This the account that we just created and you can also see the directory in which we have access to it as well as the quota.
- As I mentioned before you can also modify the account if you wish to do so.
Now that we have covered all this, we can also see some of the functionalities and advantages that we can enjoy with this tool.
Backup and recover your website using Filezilla
Since you have successfully completed the Filezilla download, I will now show you how you can perform a backup and also recover your site using Filezilla. If you ever experience any problem with your site or you need to take your whole website back to a previous state in which it was previously, it is crucial that you always keep a backup of your files. I always recommend UpdraftPlus for this purpose, since it is a free plugin that can automatically keep a fresh backup of your site always available.
Even if your website is not accessible, and as long as you keep an active hosting plan, you can always connect to your hosting files through Filezilla and download a full copy of your wp-content folder, this folder contains all your website’s essential files; themes, plugins, posts info, media files, etc, and it’s usually stored under the “public_html/” directory. You can also download a copy of the wp-config.php file which is the one that stores the configuration for your Database. Having this two files and also a backup of your database, you will be able to fully restore your website.
