Best WordPress themes 2017 – How do the themes affect the functionality of a website or blog?
When choosing a theme for your website or blog, the “technical” aspect must be as important as the visual aspect before making the decision. So if you really like the design any specific theme, but it has a very low performance, you should immediately discard it as an option. I am talking about a theme that might look really good, but it affects the security of your site, loading speed or SEO.
WordPress is already very secure in terms viruses or when it comes to preventing someone from accessing your blog inappropriately. But the themes and plug-ins could also be a source of entrance gates for this type of problems.
The best thing to do when installing a WordPress theme is to look into the documentation provided by the developer, or the features offered, in order to see if it makes any mention of security.
Premium WordPress themes ( Paid themes ) usually indicate that they pay a lot of attention to this aspect, but there are also free WordPress themes that you shouldn’t give you any problem in regards to security.
But above all that, and most importantly, you should not install any WordPress theme that has been downloaded from the non-trusted website. Always use WordPress themes that you have downloaded from WordPress repertoire or the developer’s website.
And Yes, I am referring to all to the pirate’s themes. Who tells you that there hasn’t been any malicious code placed in order to cause problems on your blog?
Best WordPress themes 2017 – Loading speed
The loading speed of a website is another fundamental aspect that you should always take into account. A well designed and well-optimized WordPress theme shouldn’t have a big impact on the loading time of your website.
Keep in mind that when you are loading a website or a page, everything counts. So the more complex elements you have on your WordPress theme, more time it will take to load.
This does not mean that you can’t have a very good looking WordPress theme. Of course, you can choose one that has plenty of decorations, just make sure that it is well optimized and it works well.
Developers tend to indicate that their themes are fully optimized and it works great, but if you do not trust them, it is best that you try to see if they offer to try a demo (sometimes you can download it to try it on your own blog, and sometimes you can test in a simulator from your own website). This way you will have an idea of how the theme works on your website before you make any decision.
There are some amazing WordPress themes that work well and also have a very good visual composition. For example, the Genesis Framework has a great list of child themes that do not affect almost at all the loading time, and also have a fantastic performance.
Best WordPress themes 2017 – SEO
This section is closely linked to the previous one since Google tends to better position the blogs that have a fast loading speed. It is also a very important factor that the WordPress theme is mobile responsive (that fits the small screens of mobile devices), now that Google also appreciates that so much.
Separately, the developers also tend to indicate whether a WordPress theme is “SEO friendly”. This means that it is already prepared with all of the code that Google needs to be able to correctly read the information from your website.
You know that the more you care for the best SEO positioning on Google and its search results, so it all adds up 😉
What other things do you need to look at in order to choose the best WordPress themes 2017?
So far we have been talking about performance, but the design is also a very important factor when making the decision of what theme you will use.
These are other elements that you should look at when choosing the design of the WordPress theme since it will also affect important things like the structure of the blog.
In this case, it is not necessary that the WordPress theme you choose meets all that we will see since here the important thing is that it suits what you are looking for. But it is interesting to keep this list handy in order to see everything that a theme can offer you.
In addition to that, many of the things I’m going to share with you here, can not be changed unless you change your theme again.
Best WordPress themes 2017 – Structure and versatility
This is, indeed, the most important part, since it is what most affects the design. Pay close attention to the disposal of the different elements such as header, logo, menu, sidebar, etc., and make sure that it suits what you need.
There are some very versatile WordPress themes, and that allows you to choose from many layouts or different designs within them and also include quite a few places where you can add widgets.
These things are directly dependent on the design of the theme, and then you’ll find it very difficult to make modifications that deviate from what the theme offers.
It is also normal to test a few themes before you choose the definitive one, so don’t you worry, that has happened to all of us. And it is also normal that on many occasions you have to adapt yourself a little bit to what the theme provides you if you can’t find the ‘perfect’ one.
Best WordPress themes 2017 – Design
The design refers to the structure, but also the colors and fonts that are used. Make sure that colors are adapted to what you are looking for. In fact, there are themes that include different ranges of colors so that you can choose which one you like.
And another important thing that you must look at is the typography, that is something very complicated to change afterward.
Most premium themes let you choose the font and size (or include a plugin that does this), but the truth is that it is not very common to find that option. Therefore you have to look for a typography that comes standard with the topic and adapts to what you need (later, if needed, it could be changed with a plugin, but fewer plugins use is even better).
Best WordPress themes 2017: How to Install a WordPress Theme
Let’s do this:
How to install a theme from WordPress repertoire – Best WordPress themes 2017
In the left sidebar of WordPress panel, you have to go where it says “Appearance“ —> “Themes”
This is how you will see the section in which you can manage all WordPress themes. From here you will be able to install and uninstall the themes.
The boxes you see there are the themes that you have already installed, and in order to install a new one, you will have to go to the button where it says “Add new” .
From the Add New screen, you will be able to find and install the themes included in WordPress Repertoire. Those themes are all free: some of them 100% free, and some others are a free minor version of a Premium Theme so that you can try it, but without all the features.
From the top bar you can do filtering of featured topics, recent, popular and even features, and also space where to write the name of the theme you’re looking for when you already know what you want.
In order to install any of those themes just hover the mouse above the one that you are interested in and it will give you some new options (you can also click on top the theme for a brief description prior to installation)
If you click directly on the blue button that says “Install” it will be installed on your website. In order make a new theme visible on your website as well as enable it, you only need to click on where it says “Activate“, so don’t worry about installing themes when you are not willing to change the design of your blog automatically.
You can also click the ‘Preview‘ button to see a demonstration of how the theme would look like without installing it.
If you look at the image on the left side, there is a slightly more extensive description of the characteristics of the theme and on the right side, it shows the way the theme looks like.
If you like what you see, then click on the button “Install” that comes up , if you don’t like it and want to get out of that view, click on the X to close that and return to where you were.
When you select to install a theme you will get a button that says “Activate” right where you see the button that says “Install“.
However, if once installed you do not want to activate the theme and simply want to leave as it was, click where it says “Return to the themes page”.
Now that the theme is installed, as I have commented before, you need to activate it in order to make visible, and your visitors will see the new design on your website.
Keep in mind that many times what you see in the demo is not exactly what you will see on your website. It is possible that you have to configure some menu or any widget so that it looks as you wanted.
